People mistakenly think that other pests are termites. This can affect the treatment they receive. It is important to remove termites as soon as you notice them. Knowing what you are dealing with is crucial.

What does it look like termites? We will highlight common mistakes people make in identifying termites, and then show you how to distinguish between a termite from another bug.

Termites at A Glance

Termites can measure anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 inches in length. The whole termite body is approximately the same width because of their wide mid-sections. They are brown, but can also be white or back.

Two sets of wings are required for flying termites. Each of the four wings is equal in length. The wings fold down to be twice as long as the termite body. Termites have two straight antennae.

Bugs that are mistaken for termites

Termite Vs. Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants can be mistaken for termites. They are small winged insects that can cause significant wood damage. However, termites can do more damage than carpenter bugs.

Let’s compare them so you can see their differences.

These are the differences you will see in the photos.

Termites:

  • Broad-waisted
  • Straight antennae
  • 2 sets of equal-sized wings
  • This is usually only visible in a small swarm.

Carpenter Ants:

  • Narrow-waisted
  • Antennas with a bow
  • 1 set large wings, 1 set small wings
  • Visible in larger sizes

Termites vs. Citronella Ants

Termites are often mistakenly confused with Citronella ants. They are both reddish brown, but they have distinct characteristics that distinguish them.

This is a picture of termites in a group:

Here are their unique characteristics:

Citronella Ants

  • Weaker waists
  • Differently larger stomachs
  • Antennae slightly bent

Although they look similar at first, termites have more distinct features. They tend to have smaller waists and an easier antennae.

Acrobat Ants

Acrobat ants can also be found inside walls and wood, making them mistaken for termites. They prefer to nest in wood, particularly insulation and moist timber.

Here’s a look inside an acrobat ant.

You can see similarities between them and the termite photos above. You’ll be able to see the differences if you pay attention.

Acrobat Ants

  • A narrow middle and a larger head
  • Rear wings are longer than front wings
  • Antennae with bent antennae
  • A heart-shaped stomach

Termites have straight abdomens, equal-length rear and front wings, and straight antennae. Acrobat ants can dig their own tunnels but termites don’t have the ability to do so. Termites don’t cause as much damage. Some termites may leave wood or insulation behind near the walls and foundation.
