Although we assume TV aerials should go on chimneys, modern living means many people don’t have chimneys. So the question of where to place the aerial is no longer a problem. Here’s the truth: Aerials do not have to be placed on chimneys. There are many other options. They were mounted on chimneys because they are the highest point of the house. Freeview TV signals are better where there is less obstruction, so it is best to mount them higher than the rest.
Where do I place my aerial?
The Aerial Guys is used to performing freeview installation in Auckland at a variety of properties. We’ve created a list of possible places where you can mount your aerial, even if there’s no chimney.
1) Front or back wall
You must first verify what you can put outside your terraced or apartment-block house. Although it is not very attractive to have an aerial mounted on the wall, it is not a major eyesore. For a better signal, simply place your aerial on the wall using brackets.
2) Gable end wall
This is an ideal position for someone without a chimney if you have a gable wall with no wall hanging tiles. You will need to attach the aerial with bolts.
3) The loft or attic
An attic is a great spot to mount your TV aerial. You’ll get more value for your money if you can get good reception. The aerial will also last longer because it is protected from the weather.
4) Fascia
A fascia in good condition can make a great place to hang your aerial. You can attach a fascia bracket or wall to a wooden fascia. To strengthen the fascia board, screw the brackets in a place that secures it.
Installing tall masts on fascia is not recommended. Instead, choose smaller and lighter aerials.
5) A large pole embedded in the ground
It’s unlikely that this is something you will find, but you can install a large pole about 15 to 20 feet high and cement it into the ground. You will get good reception, but it will be very secure and will not tip over in strong winds.
